Programme Structure
|
| |
| The MSc Economics
programme has been designed to set a new standard
in graduate level economics education in the
country, and to meet the growing need for well-trained
economists in both public and private sectors |
| |
| The MSc Economics
is a one-year programme aimed at applicants
with a strong academic background in economics.
Based on the candidates background and exposure
to Economics, we offer two Programs: |
| |
| |
| |
| Structure |
| |
| The
MSc (Economics) programme is structured
to offer the following specialized streams.
In the first few years only 2-3 streams
of specialization will be offered. |
| |
- Development Economics [DE]
- Public Policy and Regulation [PR]
- Finance, Money and Banking [FMB]
|
| |
| A
core group of subjects consisting of
Macroeconomic Theory, Microeconomic
Theory, Mathematics for Economist and
Quantitative Methods will be common
to all streams. To specialize in one
stream students will be required to
study at least 2 courses in that particular
stream. |
| |
| In
order to fulfill the requirements of
the MSc Economics Program, students
will be required to complete either
45 units of course work, or complete
29 units of course work and a masters
thesis of 16 units. Under the two-year
stream, students will have to complete
undergraduate level courses (44 units)
in the first year. |

| |
| Two-year
track candidates, after the successful
completion of their first or remedial
year will be admitted to a restructured
version of the MSc Economics programme,
which will be introduced from August
2008. The restructured programme has
two objectives; (a) to ground graduate
students in coursework that meets international
standards; and (b) in addition to rigorously
tool them in applied economics research,
thereby enabling them to independently
undertake international standard research.
A good grounding in solid coursework
will allow students to obtain admission
to international PhD programmes. Alternatively,
students can use cutting edge economics
research skills in the private and public
sectors, in regulatory bodies, in multilateral
agencies and in academia. The combination
of solid course work and rigorous and
intensive applied research tooling makes
the LUMS MSc Economics programme internationally
unique. |
| |
| Structure |
| |
| Two-year
track students will be required to complete
44 units of coursework at the undergraduate
level in year one. They will also be
required to fulfil the requirements
of the following core courses: Microeconomics

I, Macroeconomics II, statistics and
Econometrics I. In order to proceed
to their second year two-year track
students will be required to attain
a GPA of 3.3 at the end of their first
year and will be required to pass their
first year core courses. |
| |
| In
their final year, two-year track MSc
students will be required to do course
work in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics,
Econometrics, Applied Econometrics,
Applied Economics and a research seminar
course that exposes students to different
field areas given below. In addition,
the candidate will be required to complete
a field seminar in a specialized area
of economics, which will entail an intensive,
structured research interaction between
candidates and their MSc thesis supervisor.
Finally, every candidate will be expected
to complete a substantive thesis, which
will be developed in close interaction
with their supervisor. The expectation
is that the thesis will be a piece of
original research that is of international
standard. The programme is designed
to offer field courses in development
economics, applied economics and financial
economics.
