Programme Structure
|
| |
| The PhD programme
at LUMS is a reflection of our aspiration to
create a difference. We believe that it is only
through a high quality graduate education that
a university can survive in the modern world.
Several objectives can be simultaneously achieved
through a well-designed PhD programme. The faculty
is provided with an environment to continue
research effort. The students are able to receive
high-quality graduate education within the country.
Local industry benefits from the research output
of the academy and the PhD programme is able
to bridge the gap between academicians and industrialists
within the country. Finally, the PhD programme
serves as a catalyst for technology transfer,
in the sense that well-established Pakistani
researchers abroad are able to move back to
the country and contribute towards the solution
of indigenous problems.

| |
| The degree
of Doctor of Philosophy is conferred upon such
candidates who have demonstrated their ability
to conduct independent research and to present
results of such research. They have shown, to
the satisfaction of the Department, their command
over their subject of interest, and their capacity
to contribute to the frontiers of knowledge.
|
| |
| We see our
PhD programme making a difference within the
local and regional environment. We achieve this
by emphasizing that our students' research efforts
are tied with the issues faced by the local
and regional organizations. The University offers
courses in collaboration with the local industry
to specifically focus on their problems and
to initiate dialogue with them as a result of
which several research collaborations have been
initiated.

| The LUMS PhD
programmes consists of two phases beyond the
MS degree. In the first phase, the student sits
for the qualifying examination. In the second
phase, after successfully passing the qualifying
examination, the student's category is upgraded
from PhD student to PhD candidate. As candidates
they carry out original research and register
in elective courses. The maximum time allowed
for completion of the degree requirements is
eight years after a candidate registers for
the PhD program. |
