Law Moot Court 2008
|
| |
| The LUMS Law
and Policy Department organized its Third Annual
Law Moot Court from July 1st to July 4th 2008
for its law classes of 2008 and 2010. The purpose
of the Moot Court was to expose the LUMS Law
Students to rudimentary lawyering skills, such
as legal research, drafting, case preparation,
and advocacy, through a structured program of
classes and exercises which draw upon and add
to the knowledge provided in the course of the
LL.B. The primary function of the Moot Court
activities was to provide a clinical educational
experience and any competitive aspect of the
Moot Court was secondary. |
| |
| The Law Moot
Court 2008 was conducted on a different format
than previous years. This new format was the
brain child of Justice (Retd.) Jawwad S. Khawaja,
who was assisted by Sara Naseer and Saba Shaikh
(TAs for the Law Moot Court). Not only did he
organize the entire event but also shared his
invaluable experiences and knowledge with the
students. Furthermore, Justice (Retd) Fazal
Karim put a lot of time and effort to ensure
the efficacious proceeding of the Moot Court. |
| |
| In an effort
to bring forth the real court room aura, real
life judges of the High Court were called upon
to preside over the Law Moots. The panel of
judges consisted of Mr. Justice Saqib Nisar,
Mr. Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Mr. Justice
Sair Ali, Mr. Justice Shahid Siddiqui, Mr. Justice
S. Azmat Saeed, and Mr. Justice Iqbal Hameedur
Rehman. Additionally, students were given actual
cases which had been decided at the trial court
level and they were required to appeal against
the trial court judgment or defend the decree
or sentence of the lower court. |
| |
| |
| |
| To honor these
judges, the Law & Policy Department hosted
a reception on June 30, a day before the Law
Moot Court proceedings were scheduled to begin.
The tea provided an excellent opportunity for
the students to interact with these esteemed
judges and gain from their experiences and expand
their legal vision. |
| |
| Different
Moot Court exercises were designed for first
and third year law students. The Moot Court
commenced with the hearing of the arguments
of first year law students. Two civil appeals
were heard on July 1, 2008 before a panel of
two judges comprising of Mr. Mr. Justice Sair
Ali and Justice S. Azmat Saeed. Group of two
students represented each party and each group
submitted their arguments in thirty minutes.
The students very articulately put forth their
arguments and the judges appreciated the clarity
of their thought, legal writing and speech.
Highest marks were scored by Ashar Qazi &
Mustafa Ahmad. |
| |
| |
| |
| The criminal
cases were scheduled to be heard the on the
following day. These cases were presented before
another panel of two judges namely Mr. Justice
Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and Mr. Justice Shahid
Siddiqui. The two cases were regarding murder
convictions and the students were asked to argue
for and against the suspension of sentence of
the convicts. Once again the judges spoke very
highly of the students and personally commended
them on their remarkable performance. Highest
marks were scored by Syed Zainudin Moulvi &
Umer Gillani. |
| |
| The third
year law students were assigned an International
Commercial Arbitration problem, and were trained
on this specialized form of alternative dispute
resolution by Mr. Khawaja Ahmed Hosain (Advocate
of the Supreme Court) and Miss Maria Rafique
(Advocate). They provided exceptional guidance
to the students, which was reflected in the
subsequent moot court. The proceedings took
place on July 3 before a panel of three arbitrators,
consisting of Mr. Justice Saqib Nisar, Mr. Justice
Iqbal Hameedur Rehman and Mr. Justice (Retd.)
Jawwad S. Khawaja. The students were divided
into six groups: three groups will represented
the Claimant and three groups the Respondents.
The students presented their arguments eloquently
and confidently replied to all the questions
posed to them by the respective arbitrators.
The highest marks were scored by Umair Javed
and Basil Nabi Malik who were representing the
Respondents. |
| |
| |
| |
| The Law Moot
concluded with highly charged hearing of a criminal
case, brilliantly argued by third year law students.
Once again Mr. Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa
and Mr. Justice Shahid Siddiqui honored us by
agreeing to act as judges for this case and
were very impressed by the outstanding performance
of the participants. Highest marks were scored
by Saroop Ijaz and Mehvish Muneera Ismail. |

| The Summer
Law Moot Court 2008 has proved to be an excellent
learning experience for the law class of 2008
and 2010. It has equipped them with the necessary
skills required to excel in the legal profession.
The Law & Policy Department successfully
created a real court room scenario by providing
the students a platform to argue real life cases
before a panel of prestigious judges of the
High Court. |
