Student Societies

Student societies, clubs, and associations, some with multinational affiliations, help to meet the recreational and vocational needs of students, who also bring with them a rich blend of extracurricular interests.

DRAMALINE

An exciting part of the co-curricular scene at LUMS is the dramatics club - DRAMALINE that is engaged in performing farces, romantic comedies, political satires as well as serious plays. With some well-acclaimed productions, DRAMALINE has proven that a lot of potential and talent exists within the domain of the University.

DRUMS

The Debates and Recitation Society at LUMS (DRUMS) provides a platform for students to further develop their debating and poetic skills. The major highlights are the annual inter-collegiate debates and the annual mushaira. DRUMS has also sent teams to participate in international tournaments, such as the 'World University Debating Championships,' and the 'All-Asian Debating Championships.'

SLUMS

To relieve the academic pressure, sports have become an integral part of the extracurricular activities at LUMS. The highlight of the SLUMS (Sports at LUMS) agenda includes league tournaments of badminton, basketball, cricket, hockey, soccer, table tennis, and volleyball. LUMS has constructed a floodlit basketball and football ground according to international standards. Apart from the activities inside LUMS, SLUMS takes an active part in the tournaments that are held outside LUMS.

PLUMS

Publications of students at LUMS (PLUMS) is the largest full-time student organization generating funds from its publications and drawing on students, faculty and business people for written contributions. At least three publications come out annually, including the PLUMS Newsletter, Yearbook and the LUMS Business Recorder (LBR). PLUMS serves as a forum for integrating classes and sections at LUMS and provides students with an opportunity to work in a self-sustained, non-profit organisation.

LUMS CHESS CLUB

The Club was established in September 1996 and has organized several Chess Championships, with students competing for the coveted title. The Chess Championships are played according to international standards and the Swiss Pairing System is used for the draws. The Chess Club has recently broadened its horizons by sending players to the Grand Asian Chess Challenge in Malaysia and holding regular fixtures with other local colleges.

LUMS ADVENTURE SOCIETY (LAS)

The LUMS Adventure Society (LAS) encourages students to develop a taste for outdoor activities and the wilderness. Every year, several trekking trips of varying difficulty are arranged all over Pakistan, which include mountain activities such as hiking, skiing, rock-climbing and trekking.
Trips have already been taken to places like the Cholistan desert, Malam Jabba in the Swat Valley and some northern areas.

ACM LUMS STUDENTS CHAPTER

ACM (Association of Computer Machinery) is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering and application of information technology. It serves both professional and public interests by fostering the open interchange of information and by promoting the highest professional and ethical standards. LUMS is the first ACM Student Chapter in Pakistan.

PAKISTAN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL - LUMS CHAPTER

The Pakistan Students Associations (PSAs) of 53 universities in 20 countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh have joined together to form PSAI. Each PSA organizes social, cultural, recreational and educational activities on its own campus to promote Pakistani culture, unity and national interests.

IEEE LUMS STUDENTS CHAPTER

IEEE LUMS is the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE) at LUMS. The basic goal is promoting the engineering process of creating, developing, integrating, sharing and applying knowledge about electrical and information technologies and sciences for the benefits of the students at LUMS to help them with their future careers. Every year IEEE-LUMS organizes various activities to promote learning amongst students and asks leading people from their respective fields to share their knowledge.

LUMS COMMUNITY SERVICE SOCIETY

The LUMS Community Service Society was formed two years ago to provide students with an organized platform through which they could help the poverty stricken members of our society. The society regularly holds fund collection drives every academic quarter for various causes, ranging from providing financial assistance to the lower-income employees of LUMS to paying the medical bills of extremely impoverished patients at local hospitals.

LUMS MUSIC SOCIETY

The Music Society provides a base through which students, staff and faculty at LUMS may express their talents. So far, the main focus of activities has been concert performances. However, future plans include music theory lessons, instrument playing lessons and the establishment of a fully equipped music room with instruments and basic recording facilities.

LUMS MEDIA ARTS SOCIETY

The Media Arts Society promotes and directs amateur cinema productions. The society offers classes in direction, animation, editing, acting and camera work. The society has an active liaison with NCA, GIK and NUST and is looking forward to establishing linkages with other institutions.

RANDOM WALK ECONOMICS SOCIETY

The Random Walk Economics Society was formed primarily to facilitate student contacts with real-world issues. It provides students with a channel to increase their understanding of Economics by moving away from the traditional textbook approach to a more interactive form of intellectual development.

LUMS VOLUNTEER SOCIETY

The LUMS Volunteer Society is a student organization aimed at encouraging volunteer work, creating a greater sense of awareness regarding societal problems and projects, and promoting education through various means. The mission is to promote education at all levels through volunteer work and to generate funds for various social projects at LUMS as well as at other institutions.

LUMS ART CLUB

The Art Club is a student organization at LUMS, which aims to bring together students with creative abilities and inspire them to further develop their artistic skills and imagination. The Club seeks to encourage art works, leaning and appreciation of art at LUMS. The Club would provide a platform for individuals to channel their expressions through art and thus introduce a variety of artistic styles, genres and cultures. The activities of the club include providing art classes conducted by professional instructors and encouraging amateur artists at LUMS to have exhibitions of their work.

LUMS ASTRONOMY CLUB

The Astronomy Club's was set up to promote scientific thinking among students and provide a forum to invite lectures and collaborate with other universities and scholars in the country and abroad. The activities of the club include inviting scholars to deliver lectures on various topics in Astronomy and Astrophysics, arranging astronomical trips and 'Astronomy Nights' where students can view different planets through telescopes.

LUMS MODEL UNITED NATIONS SOCIETY

The LUMS Model United Nations Society (LUMUN) started its operations in October 2002. It is based on the Model UN concept, which is an authentic simulation of the proceedings and workings of the United Nations and other specialized agencies. Its purpose is to create campus wide awareness of national/international issues relating to politics, society as well as the economy.
Since its inception, the LUMS Model United Nations Society has conducted a lot of activities such as "Speak your mind" a bimonthly event where people get a chance to articulate their views on international issues; and the First Intra LUMS conference a replica of the actual United Nations session where students, as ambassadors of different countries, debated on topics such as weapons development, drug trafficking and globalization.

LUMS RELIGIOUS SOCIETY

The LUMS Religious Society (LRS) started its activities last year with a 'Ramadan Awareness Week' followed by three lectures about the various aspects of the holy month. A documentary "The collapse of the theory of evolution" by Harun Yahya, a prominent Turkish scholar, was shown. In addition to all this, Tajweed (proper pronunciation of Quranic Arabic) classes are held under the supervision of the Imam of the LUMS mosque. The society also organizes lectures by scholars.

LUMS CULTURE SOCIETY

The LUMS Culture Society aims to promote awareness, understanding and appreciation of cultures from around the world, through the establishment of cultural relations with universities around the world to create a vibrant and dynamic forum for cultural exchange. The society's activities include a quarterly theme revolving around a country or geographical location, showing documentaries and movies of the relevant history and culture and having a 'Theme Night' involving native cuisine, ethnic performances and music.

LUMS COMPUTER GAMING ASSOCIATION

The Computer Gaming Association encourages students to collaborate in the development of computer games, where use of computer graphics and design take place. The society promotes interest in game development, game designing and game-related computer graphics, apart from the general interest in competing in games. The society arranges gaming tournaments at an official level and collaborates with external organizations, such as the Pakistan Gamers Association, in holding fixtures involving Gaming cafes based in Lahore and Islamabad.
