Life at LUMS

LUMS is located in the most historical and culturally rich city in Pakistan. Lahore, also the center of higher education in Pakistan, offers a vibrant, intellectually welcoming and diverse environment. It is a city of over 6.5 million people and a great starting point from which to begin to know Pakistan. Lahore has a small but vibrant expatriate community; over twenty consulate offices are based in the city and much of the international cultural life revolves around them. There is an active French Center, a well patronized American Club and a German cultural center located in the Annemarie Schimmel Haus. In addition, local cultural life is intimately linked to the Alhamra Arts Council, the historic Old City as well as the numerous exhibitions and art galleries.
The University premises are located in Defense Housing Authority (DHA). In keeping with Lahore’s architectural history, the LUMS campus too echoes the city’s traditional red brick exteriors. The campus is constructed along uncomplicated straight exteriors, extended rectangular arches and a central octagon from which the buildings fan out. Its layout is in keeping with what LUMS aims to do and has already done, i.e. cementing the traditions of Lahore’s educational institutions of the past but always looking ahead, anticipating change and going forward to meet it.
DHA is one of the main suburbs in Lahore and also one of its newest. Close to the airport (6 km away) as well as the center of the historical part of the city, DHA offers a wide range of services, shops, and restaurants including bowling alleys, ice-cream parlors, and cafes. Many of the best private schools in the city are located in the vicinity. The majority of them offer a high school education culminating in the University of Cambridge (GCE A-level) exams that are administered by the British Council. A number of schools also follow the American high school system. Many of these schools offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities include drama, debate and competitive sports.
LUMS offers on-campus housing to its faculty. There are six faculty residential blocks providing high quality 2-3 bedroom apartments which are allocated on a first-come first-serve basis. There are also a number of guest apartments available for visiting faculty. A significant share of the faculty, including most international faculty, lives on campus which forms an integral part of the LUMS community. The open spaces and child friendly facilities make it an attractive and secure environment for young families.
The campus offers a wide range of amenities for both students and faculty. Besides the academic and residential buildings, there is a new sports facility with excellent tennis, squash and gym facilities. Plans are underway to build a swimming pool which should be ready by 2008. The University houses the Rausing Executive Centre, which offers a range of executive training courses and provides an opportunity for the faculty to interact with leading members of Pakistan’s business community. The Rausing Center also offers special services which LUMS faculty can avail, including temporary accommodation for visitors. In addition, there is an on-campus store, day-care centre and medical facilities.
