Vice Chancellor's Profile

LUMS is pleased to announce that Dr. Ahmad Jan Durrani has joined as the new Vice Chancellor of the University effective July 1, 2008.


Dr. Durrani comes to LUMS with a highly accomplished research, teaching, and academic administration career spanning over twenty five years during which time, he served as chair of the Civil and Environmental engineering department for six years and as Associate Dean of engineering for three years at Rice University, Houston. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Founding Director of the Rice Global Forum. Following the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, he led a team of US researchers to Pakistan to study the earthquake risk and damage in the affected areas. Last year, he organized a joint Rice-LUMS workshop at LUMS on Connexions technology, an open-courseware initiative at Rice.
Dr. Durrani has a PhD degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MBA from the University of Houston. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering as a Gold Medalist from University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. He is a leading expert in the area of earthquake risk mitigation with a distinguished record in research, teaching, and professional service. He serves as Chair of the Mayor of Houston’s International Advisory and Development Council for South Asia and is a charter member of OPEN-Houston, an organization of Pakistani entrepreneurs. Dr. Durrani is married to Dr. Neelofer Durrani who is a Board Certified Ob/Gyn physician with her private practice in Houston.
