About the Session: Water is so much more than simply a liquid compound composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. It has been connected to the welfare and prosperity of the human race as far back as the earliest civilisations. Water resources have shaped the trend of human settlement and where both have coexisted in harmony, humankind has flourished. Ensuring an adequate supply of safe water for everyone to lead a healthy and productive life is one of the greatest threats facing humans in contemporary times. With a growing population and dwindling resources, the challenge of providing water security to all is becoming less about tapping into new reservoirs and more about effectively managing what we already have. Join us in our discussion with Dr. Daanish Mustafa as he walks us through the landscape of water security in Pakistan, his research conducted in regions across the globe, and lessons we can learn as we move to solve our most pressing issues as a water-stressed country.
About the Speaker: Dr. Daanish Mustafa obtained his BA in Geography from Middlebury College, USA, his MA from the University of Hawai'i Manoa, and his PhD in Geography from the University of Colorado. Dr. Mustafa is a Professor in Critical Geography at King's College, London. His research interests are at the intersection of water, environmental hazards, and development geography. He also maintains an active research agenda in critical geographies of violence and terror. He has taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder, George Mason, University, and the University of South Florida. He has undertaken funded research in Pakistan, Nepal, United States, Australia, Jordan, Belize and Azerbaijan. He has received research funding from US National Science Foundation, Belmont Forum, National Geographic, National Environmental Research Council and British Academy among others.
