  • Profile

Asad Rahim Khan is an adjunct faculty member of the Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law at LUMS, where he has taught since 2019. He is a partner at Ashtar Ali & Rahim LLP, and a practicing advocate of the Supreme Court. He co-designed and teaches the Law School’s first course on Pakistan’s political and constitutional history, having previously taught legal reasoning and an elective on liberal democracy. He is currently working on a book manuscript of the history of Pakistan. His other research interests include constitutional law, criminal justice reform, federalism, and the Pakistan Movement.

As a practitioner, he challenged the 27th Amendment to the Constitution for harming judicial independence, helped draft the 25th Amendment merging the tribal areas with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and was part of the legal team that successfully challenged military trials of civilians before the Supreme Court (PLD 2024 SC 337). He has been appointed amicus curiae by the Lahore High Court on matters concerning fundamental rights.

Prior to practice, he served as law clerk to Justices Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Ijaz-ul-Ahsan at the Lahore High Court. He holds an LLB (Hons.) from the London School of Economics, and was called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn. He is an op-ed columnist for Dawn; his commentary has also featured on BBC, Reuters, The Economist, and Al Jazeera, and includes long-form pieces on politics, law, and literature.
