Students are required to complete their MS thesis. The coursework covers a breadth of the most fundamental areas within Mathematics in a rigorous fashion. Students also have the flexibility to pursue up to two elective courses of their interest from other departments. For more information, please visit the LUMS-IMM website.
The faculty at the Department of Mathematics works across a wide spectrum of Mathematical fields with research in Pure, as well as Applied Mathematics. Some examples of interests within Pure Mathematics are Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Combinatorial Commutative Algebra, Functional Analysis, Operator Theory, Spectral Theory and Symmetries of Differential Equations, while those in Applied Mathematics include Numerical Methods, Mathematical and Computational Biology, Stochastic Processes, Epidemiology and Cancer Kinetics.
Students are trained to acquire a sound foundation in mathematical sciences to enable them to pursue a doctorate in Mathematics. This programme is also of interest to graduate students across many disciplines such as Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, and others who are interested in being trained in the field.

Admission to all programmes is purely on merit and independent of students’ ability to pay the related tuition fees. Once a student has been admitted to a programme, there are several mechanisms in place to provide financial support based on need and merit. All awards are reassessed each academic year based on performance, need, available resources and prevailing University policies. LUMS is committed to providing as much financial assistance as possible within the limits of its available resources. Nevertheless, the University may not be able to meet all requests for financial assistance, and it is strongly recommended that applicants secure as much of their own funding as possible.
Your financial need and your aid application does not affect your chances of admission.
Several Merit and Need-Based Scholarships are available for students who meet specific criteria.
Financing of a student's education is a commitment involving the student, his or her family and our institution. We at LUMS gear all efforts towards assisting as many students as possible within our limited resources. LUMS offer partial flat subsidy to all MS students enrolled in Four Basic Sciences Programmes (Biology, Chemistry, Physics & Mathematics). This award is given in the form of a waiver and does not need to be repaid.
There is no separate application for this waiver. Students are automatically considered for the award when they get admitted to MS Four Basic Sciences Programme at LUMS.
Note: In case a student qualifies for both financial aid award and any other scholarship, he/she will receive the higher aid benefit.

A degree from a tier-one university is one of the few investments with all-but-guaranteed return. Studying in LUMS not only opens doors in the professional world but also unleashes intellectual and financial potential.
At LUMS, we believe that financial circumstances should never stand in the way. To help, LUMS offers Interest-Free loans to the students from less privileged backgrounds who, without such assistance, would not be able to attend a university.
At MS level, LUMS Interest-Free loan covers partial to full tuition fee expense. These awards are reassessed in each academic year based upon performance and demonstrated financial need. The repayment of these Interest-Free loans starts six (6) months after graduation with a time period of 3 to 5 years.
Remember a loan is an obligation and is required to be paid back in instalments after graduation. Loan repayment not only contributes towards the recirculation of Financial Aid to deserving students but also inculcates social responsibility and ethical values within the students.
Merit Scholarship is a form of gift and does not need to be repaid. LUMS provides Merit Scholarship Award to students who have proven their ability to succeed academically. There is no separate application for the scholarship. Students are automatically considered for the award when they apply for admission to LUMS.
Merit scholarship award covers partial to full tuition fee for one year only and is awarded to the admitted batch based on LUMS Admission evaluation ranking for the first year.
