Droughts tend to cause stress and consequently result in significant losses to crop plants and mitigating this damage is essential for ensuring a sustainable food supply for the increasing global population. LUMS faculty member, Dr. Khurram Bashir and researchers at RIKEN, Japan have discovered a simple way to protect plants from drought stress.

Dr. Momin Uppal, LUMS Faculty, Selected for HEC Best University Teacher Award
LUMS is delighted to announce that Dr. Momin Uppal has been honoured with the Best University Teacher Award in the ‘Physical Sciences & Engineering’ category by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. This prestigious award was established by the HEC in 2003 to recognise outstanding teachers and incentivise faculty members to enhance their pedagogical skills. The award will be conferred to him in a ceremony in Islamabad on June 23, 2022.
Maths Can Actually Be Fun if Taught the Right Way!
A PhD teacher hands out sheets of A4 paper to small groups of seven to 16-year-olds. “Anyone who can fold the paper ten times will be given a gift,” he adds. The class is abuzz with energetic kids, ready to take up the challenge. Each group tries hard to win but at the eighth fold, there is a roadblock. No one can go further than this. One student asks for tissue paper and says he can do it. Another asks for a newspaper. But still, they fail. “Strange, isn’t it!” comments the teacher. Yes, obviously but why?

LUMS has been recognised in the 2022 Times Higher Education’s (THE) World University Rankings by Subject in Engineering, and has been ranked in the top 501–600 universities. Earlier this year, it also received global recognition as a leading university in the THE ranking for the world’s best small universities 2020; LUMS was ranked 40th, with the added distinction of being the only institution in Pakistan to be on the list.
Team From LUMS Becomes First Pakistani Team to Secure 3rd Position at the Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Excellence Awards
For the first time in the history of ‘Knowledge Management and Intellectual Capital Excellence Awards of 22nd European Conference on Knowledge Management’, a team from Pakistan was able to secure 3rd position among several case studies presented by the corporate sector, and PhD students from around the world. Dilkasha Tarannum, Muhammad Waseem, and Shahrukh Nawaz, undergraduate students from the Department of Computer Science at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, LUMS, made up the winning team, Dilkasha being the youngest participant in the competition.

A workshop on ‘Mathematical Introduction to Reinforcement Learning’ was organsied by by the Department of Mathematics, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), from June 9-11, 2021. The speakers at the workshop were Dr. Andreas Daniel Matt, IMAGINARY, Berlin and Dr. Jonathan Shock, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Electrical Engineering Department Conducts Training on Layout of Operational Amplifier
The Electrical Engineering Department (EED) at Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE), LUMS, held a specialised training session for Integrated Circuit (IC) Design focused on the layout of an operational amplifier in 180nm Bipolar CMOS & Deep-Trench (BCD) High Voltage Process. The training, conducted from June 21-25, 2021, was planned for the scientists and engineers of the National Electronics Complex of Pakistan (NECOP).
Workshop on Textile Circular Economy – Climate Change Resilience in Pakistan’s Textile industry
Discussions around texonomy are vital and timely since the textile industry in Pakistan provides employment to almost 40% of the total labour force and contributes to almost 9% of the total GDP in Pakistan. At the same time, Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries hit hardest by climate change. Therefore, it is crucial that the textile sector in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries adapts the circular economy model to tackle their climate challenges.
