LUMS Receives European Membrane Society Award 2026 for International Membrane Day Celebrations
LUMS has been recognised with the European Membrane Society (EMS) Award 2026 for its International Membrane Day 2026 celebrations, becoming the first university from the Global South to receive this recognition. The award acknowledges the outstanding efforts of Dr. Faheem Hassan Akhtar and his team in advancing awareness, outreach, and engagement in membrane science in the region.

The EMS evaluation committee particularly commended LUMS for organising Membrane Week, held from April 7 to 14, 2026, which featured the International Conference on Cooling and Membrane Separations (ICMS 2026), a public podcast on sustainable membrane technologies, and several outreach initiatives that brought together researchers, students, industry experts, and global leaders at LUMS. International Membrane Day 2026 also witnessed participation from 19 countries across five continents, highlighting the global reach of the celebrations.
In recognition of these efforts, the award was formally presented at the International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes (ICOM 2026) in San Antonio, USA. As Dr. Faheem Hassan Akhtar was unable to travel due to visa constraints, the award was received on his behalf by Prof. Klaus-Viktor Peinemann, his PhD supervisor.
The recognition marks an important milestone for LUMS and its contributions to advancing membrane science in the region.
