Shahid Javed Burki Shares Insights on Pakistan’s Economy and Policy at LUMS
LUMS recently welcomed Shahid Javed Burki, a leading economist and policymaker with decades of global experience, former World Bank Director of the China Department, and current Chairman of the Burki Institute of Public Policy (BIPP). The event was organised in collaboration with the Chaudhry Nazar Muhammad Department of Economics and the Mahbub ul Haq Research Centre, and featured Mr. Burki sharing insights on Pakistan’s demographic trends, economic direction, and the importance of careful policy planning. The session brought together senior leadership, faculty, students, and members of the wider academic community.
Mr. Burki spoke at length about Pakistan’s demographic direction, noting that the country has one of the youngest populations in the world and emphasising that “youth are the driving force of any economy.” He also noted that Pakistan’s agriculture would benefit from shifting focus toward higher-value crops, a point he highlighted while discussing the country’s economic potential.
Highlighting Pakistan’s geographic position among key regional neighbours, Mr. Burki emphasised the importance of maintaining productive international relationships. He stressed that strategic planning, informed engagement, and ensuring that policymakers are well-informed are essential for guiding policy and making the most of the country’s strengths.
Drawing on his extensive experience in economics and policy, Mr. Burki highlighted how careful planning and strategic decision-making are central to making the most of Pakistan’s opportunities. As he noted, “A large population can be an asset if the economy can make use of it.” He emphasised that applying these principles can help guide the country’s policies and support sustainable, long-term growth.
